Shocking
Statistics
It is appalling
that in the past few years more and more children
are victimized by online predators. Some more
recent statistics are alarming. This is why
it is so imperative to know who your kids are
talking to and where they are surfing on the
Internet.
One out of every five teenagers, who are frequent
Internet users have been propositioned or sent
unwanted sexual solicitations via E-mail or
Instant Message. These solicitations are often
requests to participate in sexual conversations
or engage in sexual activities. On average,
twenty-five percent of children/teenagers have
unwillingly been exposed to pornographic material
online.
It is reported that seventy-five percent of
children/teenagers are willing to exchange personal
information about themselves or their families
for goods or services. In the past year, one
out of every thirty-three young people received
a forceful sexual solicitation. That means they
have been asked to meet in person, have talked
to the predator on the phone, or have been sent
gifts or correspondence by mail.

Be
Aware of Online Predators
The majority of the young targets are (approximately
seventy-seven percent) around the age of fourteen.
Around twenty-two percent are between the ages
of ten and thirteen. Any child of any age who
uses the net is susceptible to an online predator.
The more shocking statistics are that only
twenty-five percent of young people who have
been propositioned by an online predator have
reported it. The most shocking statistic is
that only one third of parents are taking the
proper measures to protect their children against
these dangers.
When we share these statistics, we can only
give what has been has been reported. Young
people are often secretive or too afraid to
tell or brush it off as if it is alright. Protecting
your child is top priority and should not be
taken lightly. This day and age show that measures
need to be implemented to ensure their safety.
There should not only be one third of parents
taking the proper steps in protecting their
children. It should be one hundred percent.
No child who uses the Internet is safe from
online predators, especially when they are not
being guarded against them. If we change the
percentage of parents who take proper action
to protect their children, then there will be
lower percentages in children who have been
affected by these online predators.
